Many factors contributed to the formation of this ideology including Salutary Neglect, the Boston Massacre, and the British tax policy. In the early 1700's the British neglected the colonists because neglect served the British economic interests better than strict enforcement. The colonies prospered as did their trade with Britain, without much government interference. But, at the end of the French and Indian war, British leaders reevaluated their relationship with the colonies; because of conflicts between Great Britain and the colonies during the war, ending the policy of salutary neglect and proposing reforms and new taxes. The war had left Great Britain deeply in debt and the British viewed American prosperity as a resource and taxing the colonies as a means to relieve British debt. More and more Americans were convinced that British politicians were deliberately robbing them of their personal independence through taxation. The Stamp Act of 1765 which required the colonists to buy and place revenue stamps on all official legal documents, deeds, newspapers, pamphlets, dice, and playing cards, left the colonists alarmed and the educated colonists mounted an ideological attack on the new British policies. The colonists believed that the Stamp Act was an attempt by Britain to seize control of taxation from the representative colonial assemblies and to tax the colonists without giving them representation in government; ?taxation without representation.? In order to determine these business rules, the system developer must take the specifications and requirements provided by the users and management and transform them into machine practices. However, gathering the specifications and requirements can be a challenging process. Enterprise systems are supposed to model the practices of the human resources of the enterprise – for example, if a job offer is made to an applicant and accepted, the HR subsystem will need to perform certain tasks, like employment confirmation, informing the supervisor of the start date, initiating benefits allocation and whatever other tasks have been set out for it. Often organizations attempt to model a previous process completely within the enterprise system, using work instructions, manuals and guidelines to determine the correct procedure for a given task. However, if the organization has a high investment in tacit knowledge (knowledge which is not written down, but is passed from person to person in an â€Å"apprentice† fashion), these documents may be insufficient to reflect the full process flow. Understanding of the media and its structural relationships will come from different theoretical approaches as discussed below. Different authors have different ways of categorizing theories, Little John (1992:341-374) distinguishes between macro and micro theories, Mcquail(2000:61-16) distinguishes between theories and approaches concerned with the relationships between media and society and between media and culture and a third branch of new theories and approaches concerned with relationships between new media and information society. How we think about the power of media, the media effects on behavior, and the functions of the media in society and so on is usually done from a specific theoretical approach. Below we distinguish between the seven perspectives. The positivistic approach emphasizes on scientific methods on knowledge derived from scientifically processed and analyzed data about a phenomenon. The scientific method requires that all phenomena should be treated in the same way. In research the same rules and same requirements have to be applied and met regardless of the phenomena under investigation. Assumptions in positivism Application of the scientific method involves processes of empirical research which will yield objective findings and will ensure that no subjective elements intervene to influence the validity of the findings. This reasoning rests on the assumption that phenomena’s are governed by universal laws which may be relevant through the application of the scientific method. It comprises of certain fixed steps which must be followed by all researchers and requires use of standardized procedures and techniques. A researcher is only important in the sense that he or she must apply the method correctly. Empiricism is usually related to the natural sciences and is also called scientific method. The concepts of objectivity and measurement are highly valued. Behaviorism concentrates on the experimental analysis of human behavior. To a great degree this method still underlies the analysis of communication problems as executed within the framework of positivistic approaches Functionalism is usually associated with the sociology of Emile Durkheim (1858-1917) and Talcott Parsons (1902-1979). It concentrates on repetitive observable phenomena or observable indicators of phenomena. Positivism and mass communication. In positivistic research the emphasis is mainly on the efficient working and management of the media, efficient production of media content, functions of the media, media’s effect on people and society. Weaknesses of positivistic approach The weaknesses originated from the work of German sociologist Max Weber 91864-1920) he drew his work from Wilhelm Dilthey (1833-1911) who emphasized the difference between the natural and social sciences. Dilthey maintained that as social researcher would only gain insight into the social world by not distancing himself or herself from it claiming to objective. Human action is not just observable response to stimuli but it is based on interpretation and understanding. Although positivistic research may claim that its findings are objective because of its use of scientific methods, human behavior itself is scientific and based on values intentions, interpretations, understandings, meanings and contents which may differ from person to person group to group and circumstance to circumstance. Explanations of PTSD mainly focus on the way the mind is affected by traumatic experiences. The mind is unable to process information and emotions properly when one is faced with overwhelming trauma (Cohen Web). Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder changes the body’s response to stress by affecting the stress hormones and chemicals that deliver information between the nerves (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder Web). They may orally tell their experience, listen to someone else recite the event in the order they happened, or be shown detailed images of the event (Thomas 56). Another form of talk therapies is Group therapy. Group therapy is when a survivor can meet with others who have experienced the same type of trauma (Thomas 53). In addition to talk therapies, there are other forms of therapy available. One of these therapies is Stress Inoculation Training (SIT). This therapy trains the patient how to manage the anxiety that they encounter. It teaches the patient how to relax their muscles and control their breathing during stressful times. Practicing thought stopping allows the patient to block intrusive thoughts and nagging anxieties (Thomas 59). Eye movement desensitization and reprocessi ng is a form of 4 therapy in which the patient is asked to recall the event.
